Guildford
Guildford, the county town of Surrey, is situated in the western half of Surrey in a gap in the North Downs hills.
The town's shops are centered around the High Street and North Street, which run parallel to each other uphill from the River Wey. At the top of the High Street are the historic buildings of the Royal Grammar School whilst Guildford Castle can be found a short walk to the south of the High Street (see aerial photographs).
The River Wey runs through the town en route to the Thames at Weybridge.
Located in the town are the Yvonne Arnaud theatre, from which many productions transfer to the West End, and Guildford Spectrum, a leisure complex which includes ice skating, swimming and bowling facilities.
Guildford Cathedral, whose modern architecture contrasts with the more traditional town centre, is located on Stag Hill and overlooks the University of Surrey and the Surrey Research Park.
Guildford is linked to London and Portsmouth by the A3 trunk road. Train stations in the town centre and on London road provide rail services to London Waterloo.
